Overview:
Discover Hungary’s largest open-air museum, half an hour from the capital, near Szentendre. The 63 hectares of the museum are dedicated to the folk architecture, housing, farming and lifestyle of the Hungarian-speaking region. The museum’s permanent exhibition presents the rural heritage of the past, divided into different landscapes, through original and relocated buildings and authentic copies of buildings – dwellings, outbuildings, mills, churches. The permanent outdoor exhibition covers the period from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. Explore this wonderful open-air museum with our trained guides from spring to autumn.
Tour description:
In this five-hour programme from the end of March to the beginning of November, you will gain an insight into the world of the countryside. The exhibition aims to do more than just explain, it aims to educate and entertain. This is the idea behind the history of the museum in Szentendre. In the open museum, we rediscover the traditions of bread-making, the importance of handicrafts, the advantages and disadvantages of animal husbandry. Since its foundation, the museum has also been the most important centre for research into Hungarian folk architecture. Through the exhibits on display, we gain an insight into the everyday life of rural society. The museum is usually accessible by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle, train or on foot.
